Jones delivered a calm and confident performance as the actress, while Cawte brought strong emotional energy to the role of the anxious young wife. In contrast, Blood of the Lamb by Arlene Hutton, presented by Rushen Players and directed by Sarah Lockyer, explored a serious contemporary issue, following Robyn Hughes as Nessa and Ailsa Harrop as Val, a lawyer tasked with representing the legal rights of an unborn child after Nessa loses her baby during a diverted flight to Texas but is legally unable to leave the state. With minimal staging and strong performances, the play highlighted the emotional and moral complexities of the law while still allowing moments of subtle humour. Together the two plays provided a thoughtful conclusion to four nights of varied theatre, with audiences enjoying everything from comedy to powerful drama, while adjudicator Sue Doherty once again offered valuable and structured feedback that remains a key and appreciated part of the festival experience.

Click Here for For Full Review

Day Three of Festival of One Act Plays

Friday evening at the One Act Festival brought a sold-out auditorium and an exciting showcase of youth theatre, with three very different productions performed before an audience that included Lady Lorimer and members of Port Erin Commissioners. The Stage Door Academy opened the night with Me, My Monsters and I by Grey Pratt, a thoughtful and imaginative piece exploring grief through the character of Kid, whose bottled emotions appear as physical “monsters.” Atmospheric music, clever lighting and an effective bedroom set created a strong opening, while Emily Furner delivered a confident and moving performance in the central role, supported by a committed ensemble who skilfully embodied emotions such as Anxiety, Pain and Loss. The direction used space well, with the monsters closing in on Kid or interacting individually, culminating in a powerful and hopeful moment as Kid embraces each emotion. Elite Theatre Arts followed with Lockdown by Douglas Craven, a tense and thought-provoking drama set in a dark classroom where students wait in fear during a potential school emergency. With minimal lighting, simple staging and strong performances from the cast, the production built a gripping atmosphere, balancing moments of humour with the growing tension as the characters revealed their personalities while trapped together. The chilling ending left the audience to imagine the outcome, making for a powerful piece of theatre. The evening concluded with In Juliet’s Garden by Judith Elliot McDonald, presented by Stage One Drama School, in which Shakespeare’s heroines gather in a garden in Verona to question and reconsider the roles written for them. A colourful mix of costumes, from period gowns to modern attire, along with an attractive garden set and lively performances, created an engaging and witty production. The cast handled both Shakespearean text and modern dialogue with confidence, blending humour with thoughtful reflection on the place of women in Shakespeare’s works. Following the performances, adjudicator Sue Doherty invited all the young actors onto the stage and provided an insightful and educational analysis of the plays, offering valuable observations for both the performers and the audience, rounding off an inspiring evening of youth theatre.

Day Two of Festival of One Act Plays

Bus 404

Thursday evening’s programme offered a striking mix of dark drama, suspense and offbeat comedy. High Horse Productions opened with Little Dolls, a disturbing psychological piece in which Vicky (Megan Hills) confronts deep childhood trauma during intense counselling sessions with the unsettling John (Neil King), the dimly lit stage, ticking clock and restricted flicker of a lighter creating a tense atmosphere as memories of a tragic childhood event slowly unfold. Underwood Productions followed with Bus 404, an inventive and emotionally layered story that takes a motley group of tourists on a bus tour around the Isle of Man, led by the confident Girl Driver (Michelle Cain); what begins as a quirky character study quickly turns dark when passengers Bonnie (Vivian Toro) and Clyde (Darren Webb) attempt a robbery, prompting fear, violence and moral hesitation among the group, with only Joe (Gonzo Galliad) attempting to intervene before the play concludes with a haunting and ambiguous ending. The evening closed on a lighter note with Service Players’ Roast Dinner, a wildly imaginative comedy in which a seemingly ordinary trip to Sunday lunch turns extraordinary when Ben (Tom Cain) is revealed to be an alien, overseen by his flamboyant commander Snootyparp (Toby Smith); as a plan to wipe out humanity unfolds, unexpected revelations, including Mother (Lisa Smith) and Carrie (Kim Childs) having alien origins of their own, ransform the impending apocalypse into a farcical and entertaining clash of extraterrestrial personalities, giving the play the feel of The X-Files meeting The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Day One of Festival Of One Act Plays

Our Adjudicator Sue Doherty

The evening presented three compelling and contrasting one-act plays, each exploring human relationships from very different perspectives. Janet and John opened the programme with a thoughtful and often humorous reflection on a long-married couple revisiting the defining moments of their life together. With simple but effective staging, strong performances, and well-judged lighting that guided the audience through a series of memories and revelations, the play balanced comedy with deeply emotional themes, ultimately culminating in a surprisingly tender final gesture that highlighted the enduring bond between the characters. This was followed by Parallels, a cleverly structured piece that moved between a troubled marriage and a counselling room, examining alcoholism, family trauma, and the unseen emotional baggage people bring into relationships. The split-stage set and effective lighting clearly separated the two worlds while reinforcing the idea of parallel struggles, while the counsellor’s direct addresses to the audience added depth and insight into her own unresolved past. The script blended humour with powerful emotional moments, keeping the audience engaged throughout. The evening concluded with Theodora, a bold and imaginative play set in the final moments before an asteroid strikes Earth, where two former lovers reunite to face the end of the world together. With minimal staging placing the focus squarely on the performances, the actors delivered strong chemistry as the characters moved between humour, nostalgia, confrontation, and ultimately a dark emotional climax. Across all three productions the audience responded warmly, with genuine laughter and attentive silence demonstrating how successfully the evening balanced comedy, reflection, and dramatic intensity.

The Manx Amateur Drama Federation (MADF) is pleased to announce the schedule for its Festival of One Act Plays this March, sponsored by Blackford and Co Insurance Brokers Limited.

Running over four evenings from 11 to 14 March at the Erin Arts Centre, the Festival will feature nine local drama groups, three youth entries, and four pieces of original writing.
