{"id":4448,"date":"2024-04-03T15:50:34","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T14:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.madf.im\/?p=4448"},"modified":"2024-04-03T15:50:34","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T14:50:34","slug":"reviews-of-the-fourth-night-of-the-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madf.im\/?p=4448","title":{"rendered":"Reviews of the fourth night of the festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Last night we enjoyed another two one act plays:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Two<\/strong><\/em> by\u00a0<strong>Jim Cartwright<\/strong>\u00a0performed by <strong>Rushen Players<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We were introduced to the comic bickering between man &amp; wife,\u00a0Landlord &amp; Landlady of our northern pub.\u00a0Along the way came interesting pub characters and\u00a0a hint of &#8216;something afoot&#8217;.<br \/>\nWe have all met theses people in pubs, the lonely old man,\u00a0the other woman, and the &#8216;strange couples&#8217;.\u00a0Their backstories, partially revealed and individually expanded\u00a0by each and every audience member.<\/p>\n<p>Just as in <em><strong>The Father<\/strong><\/em> on Monday, the skeleton in the cupboard,\u00a0the death of a child,\u00a0is revealed and the world comes crashing down.\u00a0Is this the end of the relationship?\u00a0Perhaps, in the final scene we see a glimmer of hope of reconciliation.<br \/>\nEntertaining, comedy and tragedy, It&#8217;s why we go to live theatre.\u00a0Thank you Rushen Players.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Viral<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0by<strong> Maria McConville<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>performed by <strong>Platform Theatre School<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We witnessed a young &#8216;cast of thousands&#8217; expertly introduce\u00a0us to the\u00a0dynamic and scary world of young people&#8217;s social media.<\/p>\n<p>As Chris said in an aside,\u00a0<em>&#8220;I&#8217;ve never been so gad to be old&#8221;<\/em>.\u00a0Was this a foretaste of <em><strong>Caryl Churchill&#8217;s<\/strong><\/em> dystopian world coming to reality?\u00a0There were some despicable characters portrayed by\u00a0these lovely youngsters along with others with compassion and\u00a0high morals who could see the damage being caused.\u00a0I think there is hope for us in the future with young people like this!<\/p>\n<p>The Greek chorus was wonderfully effective<br \/>\nand frightening at the same time. \u00a0Thank you Platform Theatre School for a dramatic piece of theatre.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Ron Beswick<\/p>\n<p>Tonight we have<strong> Wellington Theatre Company <\/strong>presenting<strong>\u00a0<em>1984 <\/em><\/strong>by<strong> George Orwell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Winston Smith<\/strong><\/em> is in prison, found guilty of <strong><em>Thoughtcrimes\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>against <strong><em>Big Brother<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As part of his reconstruction, he must re-enact key moments\u00a0from his past life, with the help of other thought criminals,\u00a0so that everyone can learn from his mistakes.\u00a0Including his biggest mistake of all: falling in love with <em><strong>Julia<\/strong><\/em>.<br \/>\nConstructed almost entirely from dialogue taken from the original novel\u00a0this bold and powerful dramatisation restores\u00a0the blazing heart of Orwell\u2019s work:\u00a0a doomed love story, with the lovers at its centre.<\/p>\n<p>This is a terrific and terrifying play about what could happen,\u00a0<strong>or is it happening now!\u00a0<\/strong>Considering it was written 75 years ago it makes events\u00a0that are happening today stunning and scary.<\/p>\n<p><em>NB\u2008The subject matter of this play could be upsetting<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night we enjoyed another two one act plays: Two by\u00a0Jim Cartwright\u00a0performed by Rushen Players We were introduced to the comic bickering between man &amp; wife,\u00a0Landlord &amp; Landlady of our northern pub.\u00a0Along the way came interesting pub characters and\u00a0a hint of &#8216;something afoot&#8217;.
