{"id":4486,"date":"2024-04-04T14:54:48","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T13:54:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.madf.im\/?p=4486"},"modified":"2024-04-22T14:59:38","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T13:59:38","slug":"reviews-of-the-fifth-night-of-the-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madf.im\/?p=4486","title":{"rendered":"Reviews of the fifth night of the festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night we enjoyed the third of our Full Length Plays,\u00a0<em><strong>1984\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>by\u00a0<strong>George Orwell<\/strong>\u00a0performed by\u00a0<strong>Wellington Theatre Company<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>O&#8217;Brien\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>seemed to get great pleasure inflicting punishment on\u00a0<em><strong>Winston<\/strong><\/em>,<br \/>\nI hope\u00a0<em><strong>Winston\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>got his revenge after in the Green Room with a few pints!<br \/>\nAnother dystopian play in our week of theatre.<br \/>\nOrwell published the novel 35 years before 1984 and here we are 40 years after.<br \/>\nIt makes you shiver looking at todays world of dictators and alternative truth.<br \/>\nWhere will we be in another 35 or 40\u00a0years?<br \/>\nA thrilling interpretation of 1984 which kept us engaged<br \/>\ndespite everyone knowing the plot.<br \/>\nThank you Wellington for a great piece of Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Ron Beswick<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>First play (One Act, Adult, Comedy\/Drama, Isle of Man):<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Service Players present<br \/>\n<em>Babysitting Calvin<\/em> by John H. Newmeir<\/strong><br \/>\nCalvin, a ten-month old baby (acted by an adult),<br \/>\ncan still remember his previous life when he was happily married to Laura,<br \/>\ndespite the constant attentions of his womanising friend, Bob.<br \/>\nCalvin will lose his blissful memories when he reaches his<br \/>\nfirst birthday \u2013 or speaks \u2013 so he determines nothing will make him talk!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Followed by\u00a0(One Act, Adult, Comedy of Menace, Isle of Man):<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Service Players present<br \/>\n<em>The Dumb Waiter<\/em> by Harold Pinter<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Dumb Waiter revolves around two would-be assassins waiting to learn<br \/>\nwhat their next assignment will be.<br \/>\nThese men, Ben and Gus, are polar opposites:<br \/>\nBen takes orders as they come without question,<br \/>\nwhile Gus nervously awaits new assignments by peppering Ben with myriad questions.<br \/>\nThe final showdown occurs not between the two assassins and their victim,<br \/>\nbut between Ben and Gus themselves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night we enjoyed the third of our Full Length Plays,\u00a01984\u00a0by\u00a0George Orwell\u00a0performed by\u00a0Wellington Theatre Company O&#8217;Brien\u00a0seemed to get great pleasure inflicting punishment on\u00a0Winston, I hope\u00a0Winston\u00a0got his revenge after in the Green Room with a few pints!
