Review: In Their Blood

At just 18 years old, former Young Actor of Mann Orry Wilson has made an extraordinary leap from stage to page with In Their Blood, a bold, original play that feels both deeply local and timeless.

Set on the Isle of Man in the 1800s, it follows Aldyn (played by Wilson) a young miner dreaming of America, while exploring the struggles, humour and scandals of a tight-knit mining community. Wilson’s writing flows with a natural, almost Shakespearean rhythm, yet remains grounded in authentic Manx sayings and culture. It’s an astonishingly assured piece of work from such a young voice.

Directed with care by David Dawson and underscored by David Kilgallon’s evocative music, the production was beautifully staged.

The cast brought Wilson’s words to life with conviction: Thomas Iain Dixon gave a commanding turn as Cian, Rachel Martin’s transformation from quiet wife to emotional strength was moving, and Sean Reaney’s Magnus lit up the pub scenes with sharp comic timing. Each performance felt rooted in truth, making the characters relatable and memorable.

This was theatre that made you laugh, reflect, and feel utterly invested. In Their Blood marks Wilson not only as one of the Isle of Man’s brightest performers, but also as a remarkable new playwright with a very exciting future ahead.
