Lovers by Tony Rushforth performed by Service Players
We opened in a cemetery with the bells tolling. Was this a foretaste of the doom to come?
Maureen, the grieving widow of Michael, was discussing her past life with trusted friend Bob.
Slowly we discover that her relationship with Michael was a ‘weekend only’ deal.
What’s going on? When Maureen leaves to tend the grave of her only lost infant child,
enter the glamorous Anna. Hello! A classic love triangle, known only to Anna and Bob, raises its head.
The secrets and lies start to be revealed with Bob urging Anna not to meet with Maureen (spoiler alert) and take a different route out of the cemetery. When they meet the deception is exposed because Maureen has been reading. Michael’s secret e-mails, when he forgot to take his laptop one weekend. Are there going to be fisticuffs? But no the two agree to let sleeping dogs lie and part forever. The lies continue, however, as Anna does not reveal her love child with Michael. In the final twist we learn that it has been a love triangle plus one, or at least plus a half as Bob reveals his unrequited love for Michael. I bet you didn’t expect that! An enjoyable opening for our Festival. Well done Service Players.
