A Cream Cracker Under the Settee

The setting was warm and inviting. Designed to look like a familiar front room of an older
generation, with floral curtains, occasional rugs and side tables.
As the lights came up we met Doris, played by Pat Clewis, sitting comfortably in her chair
complaining about her home help, sent as a spy to check she is safe to live alone. One word
from this home help and our heroine could be sent to Stafford House (which sounded like an awful place to be!).
As the play moved on the audience laughed at Doris’s dry humour and became visually
upset as tales of her past traumas were told. The loneliness that Doris felt was heart-
breaking, with tales from her life and marriage.
This production was poignantly played. Doris was strong, full of humour and evidently had
regrets from her life. Written in true Alan Bennett style, Pat captured the spirit of this proud
character with conviction.
Well done Rushen Players on this honest and well thought out portrayal.
